CAREER IN
AVIATION
The aviation industry has been growing at a rapid pace. It is
also one of the largest foreign exchange earning industries in the country
with a promising future. Aviation is an important contributing factor in
the country’s economic growth.
The Indian aviation industry is planning to increase the number of flights
per destination and to lure additional travelers in the country and
abroad. Already, India ranks third in Asia in air traffic. It is also the
second largest market in terms of total revenue collected by carried in
the Asia Pacific region. The “open sky” policy, now being followed, would
mean increased operations of foreign airlines on Indian routes.
Several private airlines have already entered the fray. Therefore, with an
anticipated rise in the business of flying, there are expanding employment
opportunities. A large number of women are already employed in the many
sectors of civil aviation, most of them as airhostesses. More and more
newer areas are opening up, which are giving greater career opportunities
to women. Women mostly staff grounds staffs, particularly in posts dealing
with ticketing, reservation and passenger interaction. Women are even
becoming commercial pilots.
In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the apex body
under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, controls and monitors the Airports
Authority of India (IAAI) is responsible for the construction and
maintenance of five international airports in the country; National
Airports Authority of India (NAAI) is responsible for all the other
national aerodromes and their flying facilities; and Indian Meteorological
Department (IMD) provides meteorological services for aircrafts flight
control.
Among the private airlines, Sahara India currently leads with all sectors
coverage and has an expanded fleet of carriers. Many of these private
airlines, with a tie-up with foreign airlines, are reaping great profits.
Work Structure
The work structure can be categorized into two main categories, namely the
ground staff and the flight staff. The ground staffs usually repair the
planes, on the ground, and command the traffic controls. The flight staffs
usually fly with the airlines as pilots, crewmembers and flight
attendants.
The various levels of Air Personnel are detailed below :
PILOT
Is responsible for the passengers, crew and the aircraft when on board.
The job is a risky one and any wrong maneuvering can lead to utter chaos
and can even cost the lives of hundreds of people in the process.
To become a successful pilot, one must start as a trainee pilot. After
attaining some experience, one graduates to the post of co-pilot. Gradual
rise up the ladder takes place with experience and the total number of
flying hours. A pilot is required to possess a commercial pilot’s license
issued by the Director General Civil Aviation before taking up a
professional assignment. A pilot’s training can be completed in three
stages. First, those with 10+2 with Science subjects, and aged at least
sixteen years, can register at any one of the flying clubs in the country.
A medical certificate, security clearance and a bank guarantee of Rs.
10,000 (under revision) are also required.
After successful completion of an oral examination, the candidate goes for
flying with an instructor and is issued a SPL (Student’s Pilot License),
valid for twelve months. The SPL holder has to fly only under the
supervision of a flight instructor and within Indian Territory. On
completion of a minimum flying time and a written exam, Commercial Pilot’s
license is issued.

include promotions to the post of Senior Air Worthiness Officer, and
further to that of Deputy Director and Director.
Air Traffic Controllers have a very specific role in the crowded skies.
They have to, through various control mechanisms, control a flight’s
movement and make its landing safe. This is quite a technical job and
entails a lot of professional experience and logical thinking.
Qualifications for these jobs require a basic degree in the discipline of
relevance to the function, and experience.
