INTRODUCTION :
Engineering is by itself a vast field and it offers
infinite scope for specialization. Engineering involves the application of
principles of science and mathematics to developing new technology towards
improving the condition of our life. the thrills of discovery the
challenges of unknown, the power to build the new thing and improve upon
the existing structures-these give the tremendous joy to the engineer.
There is no area of modern life that has not been replenished and
invigorated by engineering technology.
MAIN STREAMS IN ENGINEERING :
The three traditional branches in engineering are- civil ,mechanical
and electrical. Today the fast paced of development technology has led to
diversification of study in it a wide variety of areas like-
aeronautical engineering, chemical metallurgy, mining, electronics,
ceramics, plastics, computers, industrial, petroleum ,textile engineering
etc. Each of these grade level programmes lead to a variety of
specialisations at the post-graduate level.
DTAILS OF STREAMS :
Aeronautical/aerospace engineering:
This branch specializes in the development of new technology for use
in aviation , defence system and space exploration. The development
and research of commercial and military aircraft, missiles and spaceships
and related equipment is the work of aeronautical engineer.
· Ceramic engineering:
Involves the production of ceramic products like glass, semi-conductors,
engine parts, fiber optic phone line, tiles electric power line insulators
etc.
· Civil engineering:
Involves various types of small and big construction activities
including building roads ,airports, tunnels, bridges, water supply and
sewage system etc. Further specialization is available in the areas like
structural, environmental, transport, construction engineering etc.
· Chemical engineering:
Combines the knowledge of chemistry and engineering for the production of
chemical related products. These engineers are employed in such industries
as pharmaceuticals, food, chemical, oil etc.
· Computer engineering:
It is concern with the design and development of computer
hardware and software.
SELECTION PROCEDURE : The students who
have successfully completed the +2/equivalent programme with physics
chemistry and maths can enroll for the graduate programme.The degree
course in engineering is of four years duration.
Selection process varies from university to university.
Selection to the various Indian institutes of technology (IIT) is based on
joint entrance examination (JEE). The regional engineering colleges (REC)
of different states conduct their own separate entrance test.
Birla institute of technology and science (BITS),Pilani selects candidates
on the basis of their performance at the +2 level. Same is the case in
engineering colleges in Maharashtra.
QUALIFICATION : Successful completion of
+2/equivalent examination with a paper each in chemistry, physic and maths,
or pass in three to four year diploma recognized by AICTE or a state board
of technical education or pass in the first year examination of degree
course of any recognized Indian university following a higher secondary
examination in the 10+1 system or pass in the final examination of two
year course of joint services wing of the national defence academy or pass
in general certificate education (GCE) examination (London/cambridge/Srilanka)
at the advanced (A) level or high school certificate of Cambridge
university. Those expecting to pass any of the above exams .before 30th
September of the year of joining may apply.
JOB PROSPECTS : Almost every industry needs cadidates
with engineering degree. There is significan scope for the work of
engineer.With the opening up of service industry in india, demand for
engineers has increased.
